Former superintendent of police Babul Akhter was shown arrested by a Dhaka court today (November 10, 2022) in a case filed by PBI chief under Digital Security Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashek Imam showed Babul arrested in his presence after Md Rabiul Islam, an inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted it in this regard.

After showing him arrested in the DSA case, Babul was taken to prison cell at the CMM Court as another Dhaka court is scheduled to hear prayer seeking his seven-day remand in the case filed by the IO yesterday.

Later in the day, the court will hear the remand prayer, said an official of the General Recording Office at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

Babul was moved to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj from Feni district jail on Wednesday.

PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumder on September 27 filed the case against Babul and three others with Dhanmondi Police Station on charges of spreading false and untrue information regarding the murder case of Babul’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

The three other accused are journalist Elias Hossain, Babul’s brother Md Habibur Rahman Labu and father Md Abdul Wadud Mia.

Banaj in the case statement said the accused spread false and baseless information regarding the murder case, attempted to divert investigation, incited communal tension, and tarnished the PBI’s image.

The case was filed over a video content made by Elias and circulating it online.

The four were also accused of breaching a section of the Special Powers Act as “the video tried to destroy communal harmony by presenting false information on religious issues”.

Babul, now in jail in the Mitu murder case filed by her father, on September 8 filed a prayer with a Chattogram court seeking to lodge a case against six PBI officials, including Banaj, for custodial torture.

The former SP in the prayer said he was tortured by the accused in PBI custody from May 10-17 last year.

The court later rejected the prayer.

Three assailants stabbed and shot Mitu dead in the port city’s GEC intersection area on June 5, 2016, when she was taking her son to his school bus stop. The case was filed over a video content made by Elias and circulating it online.
