Govt implements set of election promises

DHAKA, May 27, 2026 (BSS)- After 17 long years, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government started its journey through a huge political changeover.

The first 100 days of this government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, have been completed in the context of political polarisation.

BNP formed the government on February 17 this year amid political deadlock, fragile economy, weak law and order and deep social divisions. Since taking office, this government had to take on a big challenge for fulfilling its election promises.

However, in the meantime, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is reaching the doorsteps of the people with his responsibility and sincerity and has implemented a set of promises aimed at public welfare.

An e-book was released by the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday, highlighting the notable achievements of the government, and the initiatives taken by different ministries.

The main achievements of the present government in the first 100 days as described in the e-book are as follows:

Social Security and Public Welfare:

In the first 100 days of the government, 53,096 families have received ‘Family Cards’ and 20,748 families have received ‘Farmer Cards’. About 55 lakh families are being provided with 30 kg of rice per month at the rate of Taka 15 per kg. In addition, 25 percent discount has been provided on metro rail and train fares for the elderly and physically challenged people. The government has provided advanced medical treatment to 152 injured fighters of the July mass movement in various countries, including Russia and Singapore.

Economy and Public Sector:

A trend of positive changes has begun in the economic sector. As of May 20, the country’s foreign exchange reserves have increased to US$ 34.38 billion and inflation has decreased to 8.71 percent. In the second quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year, a 13.6 percent growth has been achieved in revenue collection. Apart from this, the government has kept the edible oil market under control by providing subsidies even amid a severe crisis.

Agriculture, Infrastructure and Communication:

The work of re-excavating 666 canals has started across the country. The final approval has been given to the ‘Padma Barrage’ project, through which 37 percent of the country’s people will directly be benefited. An agreement has been signed to add 14 Boeing aircraft to the Bangladesh’s aircraft fleet. In addition, land services have been completely automated or digitalised.

Education, Health and Employment:

In the health sector, more than two crore children in the country have been brought under measles vaccine coverage. In the education and information technology sector, uninterrupted internet connection has been provided to 65,569 government primary schools in the country. In the labour sector, the payment of salaries, bonuses and other benefits to workers has been ensured in all industries before Eid.

Sports and Religious Sector:

The ‘Noton Kuri Sports’ programme is underway for sports students aged 12 to 14. In addition, sports materials have been distributed to 550 educational institutions and clubs. In the religious sector, about 6,000 heads of religious places of worship (Imam-Muazzin and others) are receiving monthly allowances from the government. Some 15,444 professional and 22,918 amateur butchers have been trained in scientific methods for peeling animal rawhide.

Sovereignty, Defense and Foreign Policy:

A state-of-the-art ‘Ground Master-400’ radar with surveillance capabilities up to 650 kilometers from Dhaka and 833 kilometers of the Bay of Bengal has been launched to protect the airspace. In addition, the words ‘Excluding Israel’ is being added to Bangladeshi passports again, which was removed during the ousted government.

Anti-corruption and good governance:

To send a strong message against the corrupt, immovable assets worth Taka 4,264 crore of the much-talked about S Alam Group have been successfully seized. At the same time, historic agreements have been signed with 3 out of 10 countries to bring back the laundered money. The agreement process with the remaining countries is also at final stage.

The e-book reported that a total of 60 decisions have been taken in the 10 cabinet meetings held till May 24. Of those, 37 decisions have already been implemented and the remaining 23 are in the process of implementation.
