MANIKGANJ, July 11, 2021 (BSS)- Farmers of char areas of Daulatpur, Shibalaya and Harirampur upazilas are happy with bumper output of groundnut as harvesting of the cash crop has already been completed in the char lands of the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials today said that the groundnut is generally cultivated on the sandy land.
Experimentally, some local farmers started to cultivate groundnut on their barren lands which usually remain fallow all over the year. Seeing their success, other farmers are now cultivating groundnut in the char areas of the Jamuna and the Padma rivers.
The char farmers are getting fair prices as the groundnuts are being sold at Taka.3000/4000 per mound in the local markets depending on quality.
The DAE office sources said a total of 3642 hectares of land was brought under groundnut cultivation during the Kharip-1 season with a production of 7155 metric tons of groundnut in the district but the groundnut was cultivated in more land than the target.
Rifaz Uddin, a groundnut cultivator of char Kalikapur of Baghutia union of Daulatpur upazila, said he had cultivated groundnut on two bighas of land this season and was getting expected production and prices.
Habil uddin another groundnut cultivator, said groundnut cultivation is gaining popularity in the char areas as it grows on the sandy barren lands and it needs no irrigation.
Now the groundnut became one of the important cash crops for the char people, he said adding that groundnut is cultivated twice during winter and summer seasons in a year.
A lot of groundnut traders visit the areas for buying the groundnut from the cultivators and some middlemen also buy and sell the groundnut regularly.
Shahjahan Siraj, Deputy Director (DD) of the DAE, said the sandy lands of char area are suitable for groundnut cultivation which is gaining popularity in Daulatpur, Shibalaya and Harirampur upazilas of the district day by day.
Every year the cultivation of groundnut has been exceeding its fixed target, the DD of the DAE added.
