As many as 1,034 workers were killed and 1,037 injured in workplace accidents in Bangladesh last year.
The country witnessed 2 per cent fewer deaths at workplaces in 2022 while the figure was 1,053 in the previous year.
In 2022, some 135 workers were tortured to death while 155 were injured due to torture, according to a survey conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), read a press release on Monday.
The organisation conducted the survey titled “Newspaper Based BILS Survey 2022 on Labour and Workplace Situation in Bangladesh” based on the reports published in the dailies.
The survey highlighted accidents, torture, labour unrest and relevant issues.
There were 196 incidents of labour unrest in different sectors. Of those, 115 were in the ready-made garment sector, the labour institute said.
Of the total deceased, 1,027 were male and seven were female workers, according to the survey.
The highest number of 499 workers died in the transport sector, followed by 118 workers in the construction sector and 112 workers in the agriculture sector.
