The death toll of Bangladeshi umrah pilgrims from Monday’s bus crash in Saudi Arabia stood at 13 as five more deaths were reported by the foreign ministry today, reports UNB.
The five deceased were identified as: Sifat Ullah of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar district; Gias Hamid of Debidwar in Cumilla district; Mohammad Nazmul, son of Kawsar Mia; Rony, son of Iskandar of Jashore district; and Mohammad Hossain of Cox’s Bazar district.
At least 24 people died and 23 others were injured in a bus accident on Monday in Saudi Arabia, authorities said.
The bus was carrying 47 umrah pilgrims to Makkah, 35 of whom were Bangladeshi nationals, foreign ministry Spokesperson Seheli Sabrin said, according to UNB.
The accident occurred in Saudi Arabia’s Asir province – around 650 km away from Jeddah – at around 4:00 PM on Monday.
Last night, the foreign ministry named eight deceased: Shahidul Islam, son of Shariat Ullah of Noakhali’s Senbagh; Mamun Miah, son of Abul Awal of Cumilla’s Muradnagar; Md Helal Uddin of Noakhali; Sabuj Hossain of Laxmipur; Rasel Mollah of Cumilla’s Muradnagar; Md Asif from Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali; Md Imam Hossain Roni of Dhaka’s Tongi; and Ruku Miah, son of Kalu Miah of Chandpur.
According to media reports, the bus collided with a bridge following a brake failure, overturned and burst into flames.
Hospital authorities said that it is very difficult to determine the nationality due to the burning and disfiguring of bodies.
A team of the Consulate was sent to find out detailed information about Bangladeshis involved in the accident, according to a press release sent from Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah, reports UNB
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is deeply saddened to receive the unfortunate news of death of thirteen Bangladeshi migrant workers and the injury of seventeen others in a tragic bus accident in the Abha district of Asir Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Two officers of the Bangladesh Consulate General, Jeddah visited the area immediately after the incident and are trying to identify the victims and contact their family members in Bangladesh.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its heartfelt condolences to the relatives of those who have lost their lives in this tragic accident and remains connected with the wounded and hospitalised and is working for the early repatriation of the dead.
