Dhaka-bound Sonar Bangla Express hit a freight train at Nangalkot of Cumilla causing six carriages and the locomotive to derail.
At least five people were injured.
The express train rear-ended the stationary freight train at Hasanpur Railway Station of Cumilla this evening, claimed locals.
Jashim Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Laksham Railway Police Station, said the five injured were sent to hospitals and that the number of casualties may rise.
A top official of Bangladesh Railway on condition of anonymity said due to an error, the express was diverted from the main line to a line where the freight train was stationary.
