India today (17 April) said it is examining the Bangladesh government’s request for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as part of its ongoing judicial and legal processes.

Responding to a question at a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are examining the request as part of our judicial and legal processes.”

“We will continue to engage constructively on the issue with all stakeholders,” he added, in his first comments since the matter was formally raised by the BNP-led government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The extradition request was conveyed by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman during his talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on 8 April.

Hasina has been sentenced to death by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

Asked about efforts in Bangladesh parliament to ratify the ban imposed on Awami League by the interim government, the MEA spokesman said India “continues to follow all developments.”

Jaiswal also noted that during his recent meeting with Khalilur, Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to engage constructively with the new government in Bangladesh and further strengthen bilateral ties.

“The two sides agreed to explore proposals to deepen this partnership through bilateral mechanisms, and follow-up meetings are expected to take place at an early date,” he said.
