DHAKA, April 26, 2026 (BSS) – National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan today said they are planning to introduce a QR code system on packaged goods to curb value-added tax (VAT) evasion and enhance tax compliance across the retail market.
“The system would initially be introduced for tobacco products before being gradually expanded to include other packaged goods such as soap, shampoo, bottled water, and sugary items. The initiative aims to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and reduce VAT evasion at the retail level,” he said.
The NBR chief made the remarks while speaking at a pre-budget meeting at the NBR headquarters in the city.
Abdur Rahim Khan noted that individuals providing information on tax evasion or irregularities would be rewarded as part of efforts to improve compliance and accountability.
He warned that strict action, including fines, would be taken against those found evading taxes.
Representatives from leading business bodies, including the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BKMEA), the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), the Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA), the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), the Bangladesh Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturer and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) and the Bangladesh Terry Towel & Linen Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BTTLMEA) attended the meeting.
