Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has condemned the midnight attack, looting and demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1, calling for an impartial investigation into the incident and the role of those behind it.
The statement came after more than 200 people allegedly entered the healthcare facility late Thursday, restrained security guards, looted equipment and used heavy machinery to demolish its structures. Centre authorities estimate losses at more than 1.5 crore taka.
Mohammad Selim Uddin, a member of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council, Ameer of its Dhaka North city unit and DNCC mayoral candidate, and Muhammad Rezaul Karim, a Central Executive Council member and secretary of the city unit, issued the joint statement.
Citing media reports and local accounts, the Jamaat leaders alleged that the attack was carried out with the planning and instigation of a BNP MP from a reserved women’s seat and a BNP leader from Dhaka North.
They did not name the MP or the Dhaka North leader in their statement.
Separate reports said Radda Executive Director Nasrin Akhter filed a case with Shah Ali Police Station naming local BNP leader Hanif Mia and 200-250 unidentified people. Hanif has denied involvement. Police said they were investigating and trying to identify and arrest those responsible.
“If there is any dispute over the land or any claim of ownership, the avenues of law, administration and the courts remain open,” the Jamaat leaders said.
They said allegations that a healthcare facility was demolished at night and medical equipment and supplies used for the government’s vaccination programme were looted required investigation.
Radda authorities say the centre had provided primary healthcare, maternal care, vaccinations and family-planning services to low-income communities in Mirpur for nearly five decades. Government records list Radda MCH-FP Centre-Mirpur as an NGO hospital/clinic under Dhaka North City Corporation.
Jamaat called for investigators to establish who organised the attack, its motive and the role of law-enforcement agencies.
“No individual or group’s political or influential identity should be allowed to affect the investigation and judicial process,” the statement said.
The party also called attempts to establish possession or ownership of property through mob action a challenge to the country’s legal and judicial system.
Jamaat urged the government to identify those responsible, recover the allegedly looted medical equipment and government supplies, and take steps to reopen the damaged health centre.
The incident is also the subject of a property dispute. A traders’ cooperative has claimed that the land was legally allotted to it, contesting the clinic’s account of the dispute.
