Shares of stated-owned Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) thrived as investors’ interest regarding the company was growing up significantly for its possible further business growth, making it the top traded scrip this week.

The company saw a Tk 135 crore worth of its shares changing hands in the week, the highest for a single company.

Not only transactions, BSC share was also seen going up throughout the week, according to Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) data.

The company’s shares closed the week at Tk 126.1 per share which was Tk 111.8 on January 5.

This refers to that the company’s shares surged by 12.79 per cent or Tk 14.3 per share in the week.

The state-owned company did not publish any price sensitive data this week.

However, in November last year, another listed company – Bangladesh Export Import Company (Beximco) Limited – joined the BSC’s board by acquiring a 5.25 per cent stake in the company.

Muhammad Ashraf Hossain, company secretary of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation told The Business Post, “Recently we have made no fresh investment decisions. What is new is that a major listed company (Beximco) joined our board as a shareholder representative which was disclosed according to the securities guidelines.”

“I do not know which things were now playing roles to help BSC shares surge,” he added.

If a company’s shares rises abnormally, the DSE writes to the company to look into the matter.

The state-owned company has not given such any notice by the DSE so far.

However, BSC shares have been surging since Beximco Ltd joined its board in November last year.

Talking to ANM Ataullah Naeem, a general investor, said “the joining of Beximco Ltd on the board of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation as shareholder representative is a big news for investors because Beximco Group is one of the country’s largest industrial groups.”

“Bexicco will add their experience and business skill to BSC, a prime reason that is stimulating investors to invest in BSC shares,” he added.

Beximco Limited logged Tk 1,919 crore worth of revenue in the July-September period of the current fiscal year which was Tk 1,758 crore in the same period a year back.

BSC’s net profit dropped to Tk 369 crore for the July-September period of FY23 from Tk 450 crore in the same quarter last year. It has a paid-up capital of Tk 152 crore.

The company’s earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk3.83 for the latest quarter which was Tk 4.11 for the same period a year ago.

The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation started its journey with only two ships in 1972 and the number of ships steadily increased to 44 in the 1980s.

However, the corporation sold most of the ships for their damages in the 1990s. It owned only two ships until 2018 before the inclusion of six new vessels.

Currently, the corporation has eight ocean-going ships. [The Business Post]
