DHAKA, July 8, 2026 (BSS) – The government will launch the nationwide ‘Green School’ initiative through the plantation of around 200,000 tree saplings at government primary schools across the country, beginning with the Primary Education Award-2026 ceremony on July 15.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally inaugurate the programme by planting a symbolic sapling at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center, where he will attend the event as the chief guest.

Under the initiative, every government primary school in the country will plant and nurture at least three saplings—one fruit-bearing, one timber and one medicinal tree—to make school campuses greener, healthier and more environmentally friendly.

Announcing the programme today, State Minister of Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said the nationwide tree plantation campaign aims to protect the environment, address the adverse impacts of climate change, and instill environmental awareness and a love for nature among students.

He said the government is working to transform primary schools into not only centres of learning but also foundations for developing environmentally responsible citizens.

The school-based plantation programme, he added, will strengthen students’ commitment to building a greener Bangladesh.

The state minister said the government’s long-term goal is to establish every government primary school as a “Green School.”

Besides expanding greenery on school campuses, the initiative will provide students with practical knowledge on environmental conservation and climate change adaptation, he added.

He also called upon education officials, teachers, students, parents and local communities to actively participate in planting the saplings and ensuring their proper care to make the initiative a lasting success.
