DHAKA, Aug 20, 2026 (BSS) – The ‘Preventive Oral Cholera Vaccination Campaign-2026’ will begin on Saturday (August 22) to prevent cholera.

The first dose will be administered from August 22 to September 21, while the second dose will be given from September 26 to October 25.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain formally inaugurated the campaign today as the chief guest at the auditorium of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). DSCC Administrator valiant freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam attended the event as the special guest.

Under the programme, vaccination will be provided in 14 high-risk upazilas across the country. For full protection, two doses must be taken at an interval of 14 days. All citizens aged one year and above, except pregnant women, will receive the oral vaccine free of charge from 8 am to 5 pm. A total of 51.75 lakh people across the country have been targeted for vaccination under the campaign.

In areas under the DSCC, around 11.70 lakh people in 17 wards of Lalbagh, Gendaria, Kadamtali and Kamrangirchar thanas will receive the vaccine at 192 centres.
The campaign will also be conducted in specified areas of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Khilkhet and Tejgaon thanas under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), as well as in Munshiganj, Kishoreganj, Narayanganj and Brahmanbaria districts.

Speaking at the event, the Health Minister said, “Although the disease is now under control, we must remain vigilant due to recent outbreaks. I seek the cooperation of all concerned to make this campaign successful, as with all national vaccination programmes.”

He also praised the role of the Dhaka South City Corporation in controlling dengue in recent times.

DSCC Administrator and valiant Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam said, “We have experience in successfully implementing EPI activities in densely populated areas, including Old Dhaka. Drawing on that experience, we are committed to making the cholera vaccination campaign successful.”

Additional Secretary of the Health Services Division Sheikh Momina Moni, DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Khaibar Rahman, UNICEF Deputy Representative Peter George L. Mais, WHO Representative Dr. Ahmed Jamshid Mohamed, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Secretary General Md. Habibur Rahman Khan, icddr,b Senior Scientist Dr. Firdausi Qadri and Directorate General of Health Services Additional Director General (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Zahid Raihan, among others, attended the event.
