Police set up a checkpoint in front of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence in the capital after 9:00pm yesterday.
Asked about the matter, Abdul Ahad, deputy commissioner (Gulshan) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, yesterday said, “Police started setting up checkpoints in different areas of Gulshan tonight. These are part of a special drive to arrest drug peddlers, militants and criminals.”
Syrul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP chairperson’s media wing, said police stopped the vehicle of Khaleda’s physician FM Siddiqui and thoroughly checked it as he came out of the residence.
Police last night surrounded three hotels and three hostels in Dhaka’s Banani area suspecting them to be militant hideouts and dens for drug dealers.
