DHAKA, Oct 14, 2026 (BSS) — Utility relocation work at Kamalapur, Rajarbagh, Malibagh and Rampura underground stations under contract package (CP)-3 of Airport-Kamalapur metro will begin this month, officials said.
“Utility relocation work at Natunbazar, Uttar Badda, Badda and Aftabnagar underground stations under CP-4 is progressing fast,” Md Sarwar Uddin Khan, Project Director of Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line-1), told BSS here today.
The relocation work at Uttar Badda, Badda and Aftabnagar underground metro stations began on January 20, 2025, he said.
The project director said utility relocation work at Airport, Terminal-3, Khilkhet under CP-6 and Nodda stations under CP-5 had already been completed.
According to project details, construction of the country’s first underground metro rail, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-1, is being implemented through 12 contract packages.
The construction of the project began on February 2, 2023, while detailed studies, surveys, basic designs and detailed designs for both routes were completed, it said.
The project details said Bangladesh Army’s 24 Engineer has been carrying out utility relocation work near 12 underground stations of MRT Line-1 to shift scattered utility lines and services to a “Utility Common Corridor.”
It said coordination with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Traffic Division) is continuing to ensure proper traffic management around the construction work.
Utility relocation at remaining stations is planned to be carried out in coordination with the main project package, and the necessary activities are underway.
Though the project authority had initially set a target to complete the work by March, 2027, the official indicated that some activities could continue until October or November next year, it said.
The MRT Line-1, Bangladesh’s first underground metro rail project inaugurated in February 2023, is expected to improve connectivity in the city by providing a high-capacity public transport system. It consists of two interconnected routes.
The 19.872km underground Airport route with 12 stations will connect Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with Kamalapur Railway Station. The 11.369km Purbachal Route with seven elevated and two underground stations will connect Notun Bazar with Purbachal.
The process of transferring land owned by Bangladesh Railway, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, the Roads and Highways Department, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Public Works Department and the Ministry of Education to DMTCL for the project and associated infrastructure is also underway.
On September 16, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the budget revisions to the MRT Line-1, as well as the 20km MRT Line-5 (Northern) projects, both financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Once completed, the MRT Line-1 is expected to improve urban mobility, help ease traffic congestion and contribute to a better urban environment in Dhaka and its adjoining areas.
Under CP-1, land development work of the depot on 35.90 hectares (88.71 acres) at Pitalganj Mouza under Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj district was completed on August 31, 2025, which was begun on March 1, 2023.
