PM directs tougher action against indiscriminate use of polythene, plastic

DHAKA, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today directed law enforcement agencies to take tougher actions to stop the indiscriminate use of polythene and plastic.

He gave the directive while presiding over a review meeting on environmental pollution control held at the Bangladesh Secretariat this morning, said his Assistant Press Secretary Gazi Shahriar Pamir.

The Prime Minister also directed the concerned ministries, divisions and agencies to properly discharge their respective responsibilities in this regard.

The meeting discussed progress in implementing various government initiatives to control environmental pollution, including increasing the use of environment-friendly block bricks, controlling air, water, soil and noise pollution, and improving waste management, as well as future measures.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez were present at the meeting, along with senior officials of the concerned ministries, divisions and agencies.
