RAJSHAHI, June 27, 2026 (BSS) – Commercial grape cultivation has huge potential in the arid, red soil of the greater Barendra region, including Rajshahi’s Godagari Upazila.

According to agricultural experts, excellent grape yields are possible in this region if proper varieties are selected and given appropriate care, thanks to the abundant sunlight.

This season’s experimental cultivation has received an overwhelming response from local farmers.

Grapes were experimentally cultivated on a total of 1 bigha and 2 katha of land in the Godagari upazila this time.

Seeing the yield and prices in the very first attempt has brought smiles to the faces of local growers.

Moniruzzaman Monir, an enterprising farmer from Ishwaripur village in Deopara Union, began experimental grape cultivation on one bigha of land.

“I never imagined such a yield of grapes in this arid soil. I’m getting a great response in the market, which has given me the confidence to cultivate on a much larger scale next time,” he said.

Farmer Sabbir Hossain from Alipur in the Godagari municipal area has made a breakthrough by cultivating grapes on just 2 katha of unused land in his homestead.

Sabbir Hossain said that the grapes produced in his garden are selling for Taka 350 per kg in the market.

Seeing this remarkable profit, he has already planted saplings on three more bighas of land for commercial grape cultivation next season.

Godagari Upazila Agriculture Officer Mariam Ahmed said that the soil of the Barendra region has proven to be highly suitable for experimental grape cultivation.

This groundbreaking first success has opened a new horizon for large-scale commercial grape farming across the entire Barendra region in the future.

The agriculture department is providing interested farmers with necessary advice and technical support.

After failing to achieve desired success in conventional farming, farmer Borhan Uddin from Madariganj in Rajshahi’s Bagmara upazila began cultivating foreign grape varieties in search of new possibilities. What started as a hobby after watching YouTube has now turned into a promising commercial orchard.

With his son’s help, he first collected grape saplings from different parts of the country and began experimental cultivation on a small plot of land. As the yield met expectations, he gradually expanded the orchard.

Currently, he has built a large orchard with 345 grape plants across nearly 1.75 bighas of land.

The entire orchard is now filled with bunches of grapes peeking through the green leaves. Locals say the grapes are not only attractive in appearance but also quite good in taste.

Orchard owner Md. Borhan Uddin Babu said, “At first, many people were doubtful about grape cultivation. But now, after seeing the yield, many are showing interest. Regular care and modern methods have resulted in a good harvest.”

Local farmers are also visiting the orchard and expressing interest. Many of them have said they intend to take up grape cultivation in the future.

Imam Hasan Sagar, a director associated with the orchard, said there are plans to sell grapes commercially in the market starting next year.

For this season, the target is to produce about 7,200 kg of grapes from the orchard, with an estimated market value of around Taka 21 lakh.

According to local agricultural experts, with modern technology and proper care, it is indeed possible to successfully cultivate foreign fruits in Rajshahi’s climate.
