DHAKA, Nov 5, 2026 (BSS) – An additional Financing Agreement has been signed between Bangladesh and the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group for an amount of $ 140.00 million to implement the “Chattogram Water Supply Improvement Project (CWSIP).”

The project has been under implementation since 2025 and is scheduled to continue until December 2030 with the support from World Bank. The implementation period for the additional financing is up until 31 December 2030.

Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary, Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance and Jean Pesme, Division Director of the World Bank for Bangladesh and Bhutan signed the Financing Agreement on their respective side yesterday, said an ERD press release issued today.

The project is being implemented by the Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Chattogram WASA) under the Local Government Division (LGD), Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

The key objective of the project is to increase access to safe, reliable and climate-resilient water supply and improved sanitation in Chattogram, and also to improve the performance and financial sustainability of Chattogram WASA.

The total allocation for the original project was US$240.00 million, out of which US$140.00 million was repurposed for the Contingency Emergency Response Component (CERP).

Hence, to ensure the continuation and completion of the project as per the Development Project Proposal (DPP), an additional US$140.00 million financing has been secured.

The additional financing of US$ 140.00 million (equivalent to 102.30 million SDR) will be provided from the Scale-up Window-Shorter Maturity Loan (SUW-SML) of IDA. The repayment period of the loan is 12 years, including a grace period of 6 years. No service charge, commitment fee, or interest will be paid on the amount withdrawn from this loan.

The World Bank is the largest multilateral development partner of Bangladesh. This financing reflects the deep cooperation between Bangladesh and the World Bank.

Currently, the World Bank financing is covering a wide range of sectors, including economic and social development, institutional reforms, infrastructure development, and energy sector advancement.
